Everything's Going Swimmingly

Perhaps it's a little counter-intuitive to do a swimwear post in the middle of March. But I'm an optimist and a planner and the combination of these traits means that I'm super-duper looking forward to my Summer holiday. The boyfriend and I have pretty much decided on what we want, but what we actually book will depend on how much money we can save between now and crunch-time.

One thing I can guarantee, though, is that swimsuits will be required. And there's no harm in looking, is there? Looking and imagining and fantasizing, that is.

Perhaps it's a little old-fashioned of me, but I don't believe there's a better swimwear designer out there than Esther Williams. Her vintage styles are so flattering and timeless - after all, she was the original poster girl for swimming. So for my holiday, an Esther Williams two-piece and a one-piece are on my 'to buy' list.

They are also available in plus sizes and are very reasonably priced. They're available at Modcloth, too.

If you're super-confident and have a body to die for (unfortunately not me), and a fairly formidable wallet (definitely not me), I love love love this Agent Provocateur swimsuit, available at Net-a-porter for £245.

I also love this Miu Miu 2-piece for its frilly girlishness. Again available at Net-a-porter, it's on sale for £145.

In general, I love the simplistic swimwear styles of Chloe and Melissa Odabash, or classic vintage styles which are available now at most high-street stores.

I'm a big fan of these from Topshop, which all retail for £26-£30:

My Funny Valentine

Even though I'm in a nice, happy, committed relationship (please don't throw things at me), I'm somewhat ambivalent about Valentine's Day. My only specification is: Don't buy me a teddy bear holding a heart... So one ex-boyfriend got me a 2-year subscription to Vogue (amazing gift! Even if it did last longer than the relationship...) and another -due to the February weather - had a picnic on my bedroom floor with a blanket, a basket and all red and pink heart-shaped foods.

So, my point is that even though I'm a romantic (completely and utterly), and I love certain Valentine's hallmarks - like I have a huge thing for plain red heart-shaped balloons (pass the message on to my boyfriend!) - I don't really buy into Valentine's day. But I do like buying things.

So here's a little selection of items to show your appreciation for the L-word without being a total Hallmarkist.

I thought it was a bird, but it was just a paper bag.

I may have (definitely) already mentioned my (and everyone else's) love for the paper-bag waist. So flattering. So timeless. So comfy and easy. So stylish.

If the phrase for a beautiful woman is 'that girl would look good in a bin bag', someone should introduce the aphorism 'every girl looks good in a paper-bag'

So here's a little post about the wonder of the paperbag waist, because it appears to be my current fave.

Recently I showed you my new favourite shorts:

I have to resist the temptation to wear them all the time.

Another pair of enduring favourites of mine are these lace paperbag waist shorts from H&M. (Which a Google Image search concludes are a favourite of many: see?)

So now for a few paper-bag waists on my hitlist (like a wishlist but with more intent):

As I've mentioned before, I am so in love with these Modcloth shorts. The mint colour is so on-trend and so me, and they just look so classy.

As usual, Topshop is a great place to go for trend-pieces:

And River Island always have more sophisticated versions of trends:

But this trend isn't limited to shorts. Trousers are huge this season (literally and figuratively). Never have I seen non-denim trousers be so popular with women. But, surprise, you can also stock up on paperbag waist skirts. Again, Topshop have a few styles in both of these.

So why not treat yourself? Tie up that waist and strut your stuff!

A Short Shorts Post

First things first, sorry sorry sorry for being so absent. I went to Blackpool to stay with my Nana for a few days and then dropped my BlackBerry in my cup of tea (dunked it like a biscuit) so couldn't upload pictures, which had been my plan for the next couple of posts. Now I'm back at uni and trying my very hardest to be organised. When I get that all sorted though I should be able to treat you to some nice pictures and stuff.

So just a quick post as I'm off to Nottingham tonight and London this weekend so busy busy.

I do this thing, which is pretty childish, where any new thing I buy will be my absolute favourite thing I own for the next couple of weeks. My current favourite are a pair of shorts I got from Topshop.

I love these shorts because they combine a few great trends - minty colours, nudes, the paper bag waist (seriously, the fashion press took a long time to catch onto that one and are taking even longer to shut up about it!) and a little birdie tells me prints like these are the next big thing, they're already infiltrating high street stores.

But I'm not really about trends, so I love that these shorts are also flattering in general and pretty timeless - looking at them, they could almost be a more youthful version of something the Golden Girls would wear or that my mother would have worn in the 70s.

In short (no pun intended), I love them!

They're a great Winter-Spring transition piece. Currently I'm styling them with (deep breath...) a loose-fitting navy t-shirt, black tights and black ballet pumps, grey cardigan and Chanel pearls. With a grey Modcloth blazer and scarf for warmth. And peachy make-up and nude nails. BUT I cannot wait until Summer when I can wear them with bare legs, creamy jerseys and tan accessories. And the obligatory sunglasses of course.

Of course, I would have had pictures of all this if I weren't so clumsy. So this post is dedicated to the loving memory of my dear, faithful BlackBerry. R.I.P.

Be the Buyer

In case you haven't noticed, Modcloth is one of my favourite websites.

Not only do they sell adorable things like this:

The Bow Down Flat Rum Raisin Cupcake Skirt Timeshare Shorts
Blue Sleek Dress Salt Lake Pretty Dress Gary Pepper Dress

....And these:

Call My Direct Line Phone Looking Past the Looking Glass Wall Art in Perched Ripe and Ready Salt and Pepper Shakers

...But they are also home to one of the most ingenious features any shopping website has come up with: Be the Buyer.

In this feature, visitors to the site get to play the fashion buyer and 'pick' or 'skip' items, leaving comments if they want. It's such a clever idea to get your customers & potential customers involved with choosing your stock - after all, they're the ones buying it. Plus, it's a really fun way to pass a bit of time.

But don't take my word for it, try it yourself here.

Oh and p.s. every time you order with Modcloth, they send you a free gift too. However, if you're not from the US, watch out for the taxes you'll pay on your order (mine came to £25 last time I ordered! Eek!). Maybe just do one big order every now and again instead.

Home is Where the Art is.

I love fashion. But more importantly, I love style - and really, that encompasses every aspect of your lifestyle and your being really.

For the last couple of months, I've been trying to make my room in my flat at uni reflect my personal style - not easy with a limited budget and minimal space for many, many possessions (mostly books, clothes and accessories).

I'll give you the grand tour...

The windowsill.

Kind of the centrepiece of my room, and home of my beloved candles.

My latest purchase for the windowsill:
Love Hearts tealights from Urban Outfitters, £6

...and in action.
SO much nostalgia.
Get them here!

My windowsill. The other candles are from I love... and
are the best-smelling candles ever.
(check out their flavours, seriously)

The Wardrobe.

Goes without saying that this is the home of some of my most prized possessions. I keep half my clothes at uni in Leeds and half at home in London, meaning I can travel pretty light most of the time.

Dresses, bags, belts and shoes. Yes, it's
colour co-ordinated. It honestly makes
getting dressed that much quicker.

Front row: Topshop, Rocha by John Rocha (Debenhams),
and Kurt Geiger. Back row: Dune, Shellys
(I hide my more 'functional' shoes under the dresses!)

Most of my top drawer. Also colour co-ordinated.
(I know it's weird). Nude, nude nude.
No prizes for guessing what colours I wear most.

Second drawer. Blues and black and florals and stripes
and greens and dark greys and stuff.
Somehow not as pretty as the top drawer.

These boxes are from Ikea and are filled with trousers,
shorts, skirts & anything warm for the Yorkshire
winter; (hoodies, scarves, hats, jumpers, gloves).

 The Walls.

I love pictures. When I'm not taking them, I'm looking through them and reminiscing. I love getting corkboards (these are from Tiger for next to nothing) and spending ages arranging them with pictures and little things I've collected on my travels. I have one huge one in my room at home, and these two small ones at uni.

Featuring polaroids of Russia, a painting from Bali, postcards
from Hong Kong, Tokyo, Prague, Paris, Siena and Amsterdam.
(And my boyfriend & I just below centre!)

A painting from Prague, pictures from Paris, Egypt,
Singapore, Thailand, Toronto & Manchester, Disneyland
souvenirs, festival wristbands & a cute baby panda
.

I love Polaroids. I take a lot of my own but I
also love these Polaroid Notes I stuck up.
So whimsical.

I got them from Urban Outfitters for £9.99
Find them here.
(Took forever to get them this straight!)

The Desk.

Both worshipped as the home of the laptop and feared as the altar at which studious sacrifices must be made, I figured the least I could do was make my desk both functional and kinda pretty.

20th Century American Drama, speakers, & my favourite
Banksy, the original of which says 'There is always Hope'.
This is where my laptop usually lives.

2 months' worth of Vogue, pens, a bird-cage
housing jewellery, & language books. (p.s. I
love my Starbucks carving from Hong Kong!)

Under the desk, where I can ignore them: Folders.
And my sub-woofer, for big sounds that I don't
want to ignore.

So many books.
I get scared this shelf will collapse when I'm sleeping.
The little empty shelf usually houses jewellery boxes.

The Bed.

Where the magic happens. And by magic, I mean sleep. I have to say, I love this bed. It's the same one my big bro has at home (it's from Ikea) and it's so comfortable, it's sometimes impossible to get out of in the morning. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

My lovely, soft bedding was quite expensive but totally
worth it. I got given a throw at Christmas
to add to the cosy effect.

On my bedside table I have this picture of a huge
chandelier installation at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo.
It's nice to fall asleep to and wake up to.

 Vanity Corner.

My wardrobe doors are mirrored (very handy), so next to it I store my cosmetics. I keep most of them in these boxes I've acquired over time. I think the first one came with toiletries from The Sanctuary in, and the other was a shoe-box from a purchase in Singapore.

Pretty, fun-filled boxes. I mostly store
things like moisturiser, hair products
& make-up in them.

Jewellery, Miu Miu sunglasses, Chanel Allure,
I love... mango & passionfruit body butter
& flowers in a Malibu bottle (it's my drink)

Yes, the jewellery that's not in a bird cage
or on a tree lives on a cake-stand. Why not?
One of many randomly acquired items.

The futon.

So, recently my Nana gave me a little futon that folds out into a spare bed. Super-handy, and soooo comfortable, but kinda decorated with an 80s/90s pattern. Like, something you'd see in Saved by the Bell. And not in a cool, retro way. Honest.

So I went out and bought a throw and some cushions.

At some point I plan to go scouring my favourite fabric shop and vintage stores in Manchester to find something a little more imaginative, but for now I got these from Primark (hell on Earth. Just about the only things I have ever bought there. Don't get me started on my hatred for that place). They're surprisingly soft, though.

Taking bets on how long that throw will be
as white as that.
Can't fault it for comfort though.

When I'm organised enough to know what I'm
wearing the next morning (never), or when I
can't decide (always), I lay it out on my futon.

So I'm pretty pleased with my room at the moment (when it's tidy, at least); I feel very at home here, it gets great light and a decent view, and it goes without saying that a positive environment makes for a more positive, proactive and productive lifestyle.

Next project: Getting some of my favourite pictures from my travels printed off and filling the empty wall opposite my bed to make it a bit more personal. (Like my Paris picture at the header of this blog).

I also really love this ingenious temporary wallpaper, available at Modcloth.

Albemarle Street Temporary Wallpaper
Arbemarle Street Temporary Wallpaper
$79.99 at Modcloth.
Just stick it on and peel it off!

Alternatively, you can actually blu-tack smaller sections of wallpaper to the wall, in which case I love Cole & Son, for whom Vivienne Westwood has designed a range of wallpapers to go alongside their more traditional flocks and florals.

Enjoy making your house a home!
